When we are under stress, the body activates systems designed to help us respond to demanding situations. One of the hormones involved in this process is cortisol.
Short-term stress is a normal part of life. However, when stress becomes persistent, it can affect sleep, mood, concentration and sexual desire. This is one reason why people who feel stressed may sometimes have less interest in sex or find it more difficult to relax during intimacy.
Positive physical closeness may work in the opposite direction for some people. Studies of couples suggest that affectionate physical contact and intimacy can be associated with lower stress responses or faster recovery after stressful situations.
Oxytocin is a hormone and neurotransmitter involved in social bonding, touch and several reproductive processes. It is sometimes called the “cuddle hormone”, although its role in the human body is much more complex than that nickname suggests.
Physical touch, sexual arousal and social interaction can all be associated with changes in oxytocin activity. Research also suggests that oxytocin and cortisol interact with stress-response systems, although these relationships vary depending on the individual and the situation.
So intimacy should not be viewed as a treatment for stress. But positive touch, closeness and sexual activity may form part of a relaxing and emotionally rewarding experience.
Orgasm involves a complex combination of nervous-system activity, muscle contractions, cardiovascular changes and hormonal responses.
One of the most consistently observed hormonal changes after orgasm is an increase in prolactin. Research has found that prolactin levels can remain elevated for some time after orgasm in both men and women.
Scientists have suggested that this response may be involved in the temporary reduction in sexual arousal or desire that often occurs after climax.
Feeling relaxed or sleepy after sexual activity is common, but it cannot be explained by one hormone alone.
Prolactin, changes in autonomic nervous-system activity, physical exertion and the general transition from arousal to relaxation may all contribute to the feeling of winding down after orgasm.
So if you or your partner feel ready to sleep afterwards, it does not necessarily mean that something is wrong. It may simply reflect the body's normal transition from stimulation back toward rest.
Research into relationships and stress suggests that affectionate physical contact may influence how the body responds to stressful situations.
In one laboratory study involving couples, greater spontaneous intimacy was associated with reduced cortisol responses in women and faster cortisol recovery in both men and women after a psychosocial stress test.
Other research has found associations between recent partnered sexual activity and certain measures of stress response. However, these studies do not mean that sex is a guaranteed stress treatment or that everyone responds in the same way.
The emotional context matters. Intimacy is most likely to feel relaxing when it is wanted, comfortable, consensual and connected with positive feelings.

Dopamine plays an important role in motivation, anticipation and reward. Sexual arousal and pleasurable experiences involve brain circuits in which dopamine is one of several important chemical messengers.
Oxytocin is associated with social bonding, physical touch and aspects of sexual and reproductive behaviour. Its effects are complex and depend strongly on context.
Prolactin rises noticeably after orgasm in many people. Researchers believe this change may contribute to the post-orgasmic reduction in sexual arousal and the feeling of satisfaction that can follow climax.
Pleasurable experiences also involve the body's own opioid and reward systems. Rather than one single “pleasure hormone”, sexual experience results from many interacting processes in the brain and body.
The relationship works in both directions. Intimacy can feel relaxing, but high levels of stress can also make sexual desire more difficult.
Chronic stress may influence mood, hormone production and sexual function. Fatigue, anxiety and poor sleep can further reduce the desire or energy for intimacy.
That is why there is no need to treat sex as another task on a wellness checklist. Sometimes rest, sleep or simply feeling emotionally safe may be more important.
Sexual wellness is not about meeting a certain frequency or believing that everyone “needs” orgasms in the same way.
For some people, intimacy may be an enjoyable way to relax, reconnect with a partner or explore pleasure alone. For others, stress may reduce interest in sexual activity altogether. Both experiences can be completely normal.
The most important factors are comfort, consent and personal preference.
